Elizabeth Rhein- Ransom and Experiences- Space Trilogy

There was a much talked about section of the Space Trilogy where Ransom ate the fruit and chose not to eat another one even though he wanted to. I thought this section was really interesting because it got the class to talk in depth about experiences and how continuing the same thing will eventually make it dull and not as special. I really liked Ransom’s choice to not eat the other fruit because then he can fully appreciate the time that he was eating it. This kind of reminded me about craving a specific type of food. For example, if I really wanted to eat cheesecake and then was finally able to eat a piece, the first bite will always be the best. If I continued to eat the same piece, by the time I get to the end, it won’t be as special and I might actually be a little tired of eating the same piece by then. Eating that second fruit would have ruined whatever image Ransom had of the first. He can go away from the experience content with his memory and taste that came with the fruit instead of becoming sick of that taste. Nothing really ever is the same as the first bite of something new. It’s kind of like a song played over and over again. The first time that song is heard, it’s special and there really is no way to fully have the same feelings that were felt listening to that song the first time. If the same song is played over and over, eventually the listener would become sick of the song and not want to listen to it again. Also, it’s never good to have a large quantity of anything. For Ransom to keep his experience to a one time thing is probably a rare act because people usually like to continue with something they like.
