Elizabeth Rhein-Shadowlands-Student's Choosing

The movie we watched in class this semester was a very touching and heartfelt film. I truly enjoyed watching the “Shadowlands” and it helped me better understand C. S. Lewis. My favorite moral that came from the film is the fact that it is better to love and lost than to love at all. C. S. Lewis comes to terms with this fact and when he falls in love Joy, he decides to go all the way instead of hiding his emotions like he did when his mother died. When Joy is diagnosed with cancer, Lewis learns that the pain that comes with loving someone is worth it. The film was very touching and I really liked how it depicted this very influential and intelligent man falling love with an unusual woman. Something I thought was interesting was the statement Lewis made in his book The Four Loves that people who are truly in love with each other would never part because they would prefer to feel the pain of being kept together more so than the pain of breaking up. I guess it just shows that with loves comes pain. Those who choose to close their hearts off from the rest of the world are damned. To exist we need to love and to love we have to be ready to feel the pain that will come with it. It was a very powerful film and I enjoyed watching it.
